Fight Club (1999)
Directed by David Fincher
USA
Based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk, the movie tells the story of an insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more (IMDb).
The Narrator (Edward Norton) is an automobile company employee who is unfulfilled by his job and his life. The encounter with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) changes his life and his relationship with cigarettes. Indeed, when Tyler offers him a cigarette, in the first part of the film, the Narrator tells him he doesn’t smoke… but later in the movie, we do actually see him smoking just like Tyler does.
Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is a soap salesman. Really is the Narrator’s imaginary alter ego, is everything the Narrator wishes he was: charismatic, masculine, skillful… and, of course, a heavy smoker.
Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter) is the film’s only woman. She is a self-destructive, careless and kleptomaniac woman who goes to cancer support groups to feel better, so becomes Narrator’s obsession. Marla is is fascinated with death and, obviously, by cigarettes.
